Free Online Typing Test in English and Hindi

Free Online Typing Test in English and Hindi (HTML, CSS, JS)

This free online typing test in English and Hindi is built for students preparing for government, court, and clerical typing exams. Pick a duration, start typing, and watch your words per minute (WPM) and accuracy update live – scored the same way most official exam software works. The passages are long and varied on purpose, so you can type continuously for a full 2, 5, or 10-minute session without seeing the same lines repeat right after each other. Switch to Hindi to practice Unicode-based typing, or stay in English to build raw speed and consistency.

How to Use This Typing Test

  1. Select English or हिंदी (Hindi), and pick a duration of 2, 5, or 10 minutes depending on how long you want to practice.
  2. Click inside the text box and start typing the passage shown. The timer starts on your first keystroke.
  3. Correct characters turn green, mistakes turn red, so you can see your accuracy update as you go.
  4. Keep typing until the timer runs out - the passage is long enough that you won't run out of new text during a 10-minute session.
  5. When time is up, your WPM and accuracy are saved automatically and added to your progress chart below.

Beginner's Guide to Hindi Typing (Kruti Dev / Remington Layout)

Most exam centres still use the Kruti Dev font, which is not typed phonetically - each QWERTY key produces a fixed Hindi character or matra, regardless of how the word sounds in English. Here's what trips up almost every beginner:

  • Type in visual order, not sound order. Kruti Dev places characters exactly where you type them, left to right. If a matra visually sits to the left of a consonant (like the short "ि" sign), you must type that key before the consonant, even though the consonant sound comes first when you say the word.
  • Learn the home row first. Keys A, S, D, F, G, H, J, K, L, ; carry some of the most frequently used matras and consonants. Getting comfortable here before moving to the top and bottom rows speeds up learning a lot.
  • The virama (्) key is your best friend for conjuncts. Words like "स्कूल" or "विद्यालय" need the half-letter joiner key between two consonants - forgetting it is one of the most common beginner mistakes.
  • Don't switch fonts halfway through practice. Kruti Dev and Unicode (Mangal) use completely different typing logic. Pick the one your target exam actually uses and stick to it during practice.
  • Speed comes after accuracy. Beginners who slow down to place matras correctly in the first few weeks end up typing faster overall than those who rush and constantly backspace.

QWERTY Key Hindi Character Table (No-Shift / Base Layer)

This is what each key types by default, without holding Shift. Keep this open in a second tab while you practice.

Only the base (no-Shift) layer is shown, since it's the part we could confirm consistently. For Shift-layer characters (ख, छ, ठ, ध, etc.), cross-check against the installed Kruti Dev font's character map before treating it as final - published charts vary slightly, and this is one detail worth getting exactly right for exam prep.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Is this typing test free to use?

Yes. This English and Hindi typing test is completely free, with no sign-up required, and you can retake it as many times as you like while preparing for your exam.

How is WPM calculated?

WPM is worked out as correctly typed characters divided by five, divided by the time elapsed in minutes - the same method most government exam software uses.

Does this cover Kruti Dev typing?

The Hindi mode here uses Unicode Hindi text. If your exam specifically requires the Kruti Dev key layout, pair this with dedicated Kruti Dev keyboard practice, since the two layouts map keys differently.

What typing speed do government exams usually expect?

It varies by exam, but most government typing tests look for roughly 30–35 WPM in English and 25–30 WPM in Hindi with high accuracy. Always check your own exam notification for the exact requirement.
